Zeitgeist

As I’ve made mention of before, Germany is ace and every true Britisher should know we can learn a lot from zee Germans. Their beer is clean-filtered and refreshing, they know their way around a sausage, and before the internet their porn was the most avant garde. Possibly the latter two attributes are related.

There are a few places to gorge on Deutsches gefooden in London, but Zeitgeist (http://zeitgeist-london.com/) in Vauxhall is my favourite. The Bavarian Beerhouse near Old Street (http://www.bavarian-beerhouse.co.uk/) tries to recreate the intimate charm of Octoberfest in Munich and while enjoyable, falls a little short due to all the British patrons being terribly well behaved and not pissing everywhere. The Octoberfest Pub (http://www.octoberfestpub.com/) in Fulham is a decent place to watch the footy but I’ve not eaten in there.

Bratwust is the thing. I’m suspicious of currywurst. Who’s to say currywurst aren’t just Bratwurst on the turn doused in curry sauce? The Bratwurst in Zeitgeist are excellent and come with a hefty serving of chips and an array of condiments which I reject because what’s the point of neutralising the flavour of the Bratwurst? Me and the Ball & Chain scoffed them down in a matter of seconds and washed them down with a tall, cool Kaltenberg (lager – weißbier is tasty but ruins me).

£25 for two.

Phew. I made it through that without mentioning the gaping lack of TV crime exports, absence of an international test cricket team or Angela Merkel’s come-to-bed eyes.

DEUTSCHLAND!

Zeitgeist? Or The Jolly Gardeners? Someone has some explaining to do. Someone German.

The interior of Zeitgeist. I was expecting something more dramatic for the inside of a Zeitgeist, like the sequence at the end of 2001.

That's bratwurst that is.

Original German Sausages was the name of my mime group at college. We got a lot of disappointed audiences.
