Talk about your low hanging fruit. Italian food – check! Pizza in fact. Prepare to be amazed.
Went with the future Mrs Del Monte and her certifiable mates to Gourmet Pizza – great location. (http://www.gourmetpizzacompany.co.uk). It’s in Gabriel’s Wharf on the South Bank which is the sort of place I pass in summer when walking along the Thames thinking enviously I’d love to be in the midst of that lively crowd then get really uppity when one of my chums has the gall to organise a rendez-vous there.
I’m so easily disappointed with pizza, but they did the trick here. As my bird pointed out: “The cheese goes right to the edge.” The starters were tasty looking, but I refrained.
£90 for 4 people with no booze. Still. I’m so depressed.
I’ve also been to Pizza East (http://www.pizzaeastportobello.com/) which one friend loves and my professional Italian friend (a mate who lived in Italy) wasn’t blown away. But then this is his Skype avatar so how much can you trust him:
I love Carluccio’s (http://www.carluccios.com/). So does my mum. You got a problem with that?
My preferred pizza used to be in Brussels – Mama Roma (http://www.mammaroma.com/en). Potato and truffle pizza. Yum.
What the deuce is the problem with fancier pasta in Italian restaurants? What’s wrong with some decent farfalle, spirali or trofie? Even rigatoni is a rarity.
ITALIA!
- Prawns. Or PRAWNS to our American friends.
